For the fine underdown to be sold and processed further, it must be de-haired. De-hairing is a mechanical process that divides the coarse hairs from the fine hair. Once the fiber has been through the techniques of de-hairing, washing, carding it is prepared either to spin resulting cashmere.

The fiber is sometimes called pashm (Persian for wool) or pashmina (Persian word gleaned from Pashm) for its use in the hand-crafted scarfs of Kashmir. This goes back to the third century BC. The word cashmere derives from a very old spelling of Kashmir. Cashmere is fine in texture, and powerful, light, and soft. Clothes made from it provide excellent insulation.
